Our Story

About Us

After witnessing several of their friends children struggle with cancer, Trumansburg residents, Fred and Tracy VanDerzee were inspired to start raising money....and T-Burg Takes On Pediatric Cancer was born.

Since their first fundraising event in 2010, the pair, along with a board of a few other community members, have hosted several fundraising events – raising over $600,000 to date and given out approx $500,000 directly to families. Unlike national organizations, we have low administrative costs, with our board members donating their time, expertise, gas money, supplies, and more in order to keep costs low or at zero.

When families receive the devastating news of a pediatric cancer diagnosis , their world stops. These families find themselves sacrificing work or quitting their jobs, missing bill payments, dealing with failing transportation, traveling 90 miles one way to receive treatments, staying away from home, and, sometimes all while tending to their other children. Everyday life tasks can become overwhelming and things can fall by the wayside; because in those times when you are dealing with a sick child, nothing else matters.

This is where we step in to pick up the slack, so those families can concentrate on their children. Trumansburg Takes on Pediatric Cancer raises funds to support these NY families. The funds we raise go to the immediate family of the cancer patient in order to support any unplanned expenditures that come with their children’s cancer diagnosis. Gas money for trips to the hospital, lodging, wheelchairs, utility bills, car insurance, meals, furnace fixes, & sometimes funeral expense are just a sample of what we help with.
